COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is a progressive and serious respiratory disease and the third-leading cause of death in the United States. Often developed as a result of emphysema and chronic bronchitis, most cases of COPD happen when the lungs are exposed to pollutants or contaminants over long periods of time.
